Program Notes

Normally speaking, human has a limited hearable range of 20Hz to 20000Hz. Everyone is unique. Some of us are more able to hear the higher register, such as 20000Hz – 22000Z; some are more able to hear the lower, such as 15Hz – 30Hz. Some of us can hear the both extremes, while some can only hear a narrower range like 30Hz – 14000Hz.

This is the first time I have made use of the barely hearable range (15Hz – 30Hz; 15000Hz – 22000Hz) in my music composition. The outcome of using these ranges of sound can further enhance the philosophy behind the piece: Everyone is Unique. When different people listen to it, they will hear different things depending on his or her own hearable range.  Although they are listening to the same piece at the same time, some of them will hear more, while some will hear less.

Now, here comes a story: Two friends sitting next to each other are listening to this music composition. One can hear the highest range of the piece, while the other cannot. The one who cannot hear it said, “My friend, I absolutely admire you that you can hear it. I am really interested to know what it sounds like.” His friend answered, “Oh, my friend. The highest range is not funny at all but sting. I cannot bear it and I really admire you that you cannot hear it.”

The philosophy behind this music composition is to bring out a question: Do we really need to admire others who have different talents from ours?
