IEP. Symposium for Gifted Education, Nanyang Technical University, Singapore.
Summary
IEP (Individual Education Plan) has been adopted since 2002 in G. T. (Ellen Yeung) College, which is the pioneer primary-cum-secondary school in Hong Kong, for the nurture of gifted children. The IEP program in the College is targeted for gifted children in Grade 3 to Grade 5, and it provides them with individualized training in certain domain, including Chinese, English, Mathematics, Science, Chinese History, Visual Arts, Music, and Physical Education. The program has been found quite successful in further developing students’ talents and giving joyous moments to students who are participating in the IEP.
This paper is aimed at a presentation of the overall concept of IEP and the administrative support for its implementation such as resources and parental coordination. It further shows how IEP was used effectively in nurturing four gifted children; two were musically gifted while the others were talented in physical education. A special training program was designed according to the students’ strengths and needs after extensive discussion with the students and their parents. The training program was in a higher and wider level, where the learning materials was enriched in a greater depth and accelerated in a faster pace, so as to well match with students’ advanced skills in their own areas.
The case study in this paper demonstrates an innovative way that may be utilized in the common teaching and learning environment in primary schools. Through this study, it is believed that gifted education may attract more concern in our society.
